Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is found in food but can also be made by the body when the skin is exposed to sunlight.

The main function of vitamin D is the maintenance of normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D also helps to absorb calcium which is why it can often be found included in calcium supplements. Vitamin D helps stop the bones from becoming thin and brittle.

Because of the amount of processing of our foods today by a money-above-health conscious society, the so-called fortified foods are often the major dietary sources of vitamin D. What this means of course is just a supplement mixed in with your food. Foods that contain good amounts of vitamin D include fatty fish and fish oils, which themselves of course have many great benefits. Exposure to sunlight is also an important source of vitamin D, and in the summer if having a lot of exposure to the sun, it is likely unnecessary to take vitamin D supplements.
