Calcium and Phosphorus

Calcium and phosphorus are very important macro minerals to the body.

Both calcium and phosphorus help to build bones and teeth, particularly important in children and the elderly. They also play a number of other key roles. Calcium can be found circulating in the blood and helps towards blood clotting and muscle contraction including that of the heart. It also helps nerve impulses and the maintenance of acid/alkali and water balance in the body. There are many sources of calcium, including the vegetable kale as well as other green leafy vegetables, figs, nuts such as brazil nuts, and fish like salmon if you also eat the small soft edible bones. Milk of course also contains calcium, although it is not a good a source as we have been told. (See Why NOT to Drink your Milk)

Phosphorus works in the metabolism involved in the release of energy from the nutrients as well as taking a vital part in the maintenance of the body's acid/alkaline balance. Interestingly, this mineral is also used in the formation of DNA. Being widely available in foods, deficiency is rare. Appropriate amounts of these minerals are important.

In the meantime, stay healthy.
